Kenya Kieni AA
milk chocolate, redcurrant, blood orange
Varieties: SL28 & SL34
Processing: Fully washed
We’re so very proud to be purchasing Kieni AA again for the 5th year running. Kieni washing station is a member of the Mugaga Farmers Cooperative Society, located in the state of Nyeri, in Kenya's central highlands. The Mugaga Farmers Cooperative is known to produce some of the best coffees in all of Kenya. The beautiful red volcanic soil and cool nights of the central valley make for perfect coffee growing.
Once the coffee cherries arrive at Kieni, they undergo hand sorting before going through the depulping machine. After depulping, the coffee is fermented, rinsed, and goes through a second fermentation. Coffee is then washed clean in fresh river water. The coffee is dried on raised beds and undergoes additional hand sorting before being dry milled, and hand sorted again!
This AA lot of Kieni has loads of chocolate orange and is deliciously sweet. In our QC work with this coffee we’ve found it to be more candy forward and less tropical than our other Kenyan offerings. As with all Kenyans, Kieni AA loves to extract. We recommend a coarse grind for this coffee on all brew methods.
About the Variety: Scott Laboratories was a research organisation based in Kenya that developed multiple cultivars on contract between 1934 to 1963. The “SL” is in reference to the organisation, and the numbers are representative of the lab type. SL-28 is known for exceptional cup quality, moderate yields, and great drought resistance. SL-34 on the other hand has very high yielding potential, can be grown nearly anywhere, and is said to tolerate drought and high rainfall extremely well.
